How to Manage Depression

Depression is the most common mental disorder. It is not just feeling sad or crying. It is a  state of mind wherein negativity affects the way one feels, way of thinking and how one acts. Continual sadness and lack of interest in activities that were previously enjoyed characterizes depression. It disturbs sleep and appetite. There is no single cause of depression, it can be due to various reasons. For certain people, a stressful event as divorce, illness, job or financial problem and any other can cause depression.

Everything seems to be difficult when one is depressed. Reading may typically give you pleasure but all of a sudden it seems to be heavy, any kind of texting, talking and communication also can be exhausting with the onset of depression.

A sad mood lasting for a long time which interferes with day to day functioning can be depression.

Depression is more than just feeling down or having a bad day. When a sad mood lasts for a long time and interferes with normal, everyday functioning, you may be depressed. Symptoms of depression include:  Anxiety often or all the time, feeling sad and irritable, not wanting to do activities that used to be fun, restlessness, easily getting frustrated etc.

Sleep also gets disturbed due to depression. Vivid dreams that may be threatening can make things less peaceful. When trying to get back to a routine, depression changes the music. There is nothing to look forward to anymore.

Therapy and Meditation are  helpful treatment to fight depression.

For those in the struggle of depression:

The first recommendation is seeking help. We can't do everything on our own and do not need to do also. It is here that we need help. Help can be in the form of therapy, support from loved ones etc. Write 5 things for which one feels grateful each day. They do not have to be big things, even small ones can make you smile the most.

For those supporting the depressed :

Help the ones whom you love: There would be some time when the depressed loved one will not be able to do so many things.

Keep up self care: One cannot help others without keeping themselves fit.To help others one needs to take care of their own self (self care) and replenish their energy. To help fight depression remind the loved one 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙩 is a temporary phase and will not last for long. Need to tell the depressed loved one who they really are and that they are still wonderful and brilliant.

Depression is treatable, a combination of therapy and antidepressant medicines can help ensure recovery.
